Drivers' Mate Agency UK

Drivers' mates and second crew for two-person deliveries, installations and heavy handball, supplied as temporary cover to operators across the UK.

The problem

Why this seat is hard to fill

A missing mate cancels the whole delivery, not half of it — the vehicle, the driver and the route all stand idle. It is the cheapest seat on the run and the one that most often goes unfilled.

What we check before anyone is confirmed

  • Right to work verified from original documents.
  • References taken.
  • Manual handling capability confirmed against the actual work.
  • Where deliveries are into private homes, a basic DBS check where the client requires one.

Shift patterns

Mates work the driver's shift — typically early loading with the crew away by mid-morning and evening slots on home delivery. Weekend work is common on retail installation.

Pay and rates

PAYE hourly, paid weekly, at the rate agreed on the booking, with overtime confirmed up front. Holiday accrues under the Working Time Regulations. After 12 weeks in the same role, Agency Workers Regulations parity applies.

Questions, answered

How fast can you supply a drivers' mate?

Same-day cover is possible where the pool allows it and next day is the realistic standard. We would rather decline a booking than confirm one and fail to fill it on the morning.

What do you check before a drivers' mate starts?

Right to work verified from original documents. References taken. Manual handling capability confirmed against the actual work. Where deliveries are into private homes, a basic DBS check where the client requires one. Licence entitlements are re-checked every 90 days for as long as a worker is on our books.

How are temporary drivers' mates paid and invoiced?

PAYE hourly, paid weekly, at the rate agreed on the booking, with overtime confirmed up front. Holiday accrues under the Working Time Regulations. After 12 weeks in the same role, Agency Workers Regulations parity applies. Hours are logged against the booking as a digital timesheet, which you approve or reject with a reason and approved timesheets roll into one consolidated weekly invoice.

Do the Agency Workers Regulations apply?

Yes. After 12 weeks in the same role with the same hirer, an agency worker qualifies for equal treatment on pay and basic conditions. We count that from the first shift and tell you before the threshold lands, not after.
