What we place and what we do not

Transport Temps places temporary and agency work: shifts, blocks of shifts and ongoing assignments with a hirer. That covers Class 1, Class 2, 7.5 tonne and van driving, forklift and warehouse work, drivers' mate and second-crew work and transport office cover. It also covers the qualification-led seats — ADR, lorry loader, Moffett, tanker, PCV and refuse.

We do not place permanent jobs. If a permanent contract is what you want, Freight Talent is the permanent-only sister brand. Both are trading names of the same company, Maine Couriers Ltd and it is a straight referral, not a fee arrangement that costs you anything.

Transport Temps is a trading name of Maine Couriers Ltd, a courier operator that runs its own fleet, its own drivers and its own compliance. The standards described on this page are the ones an operator applies to its own vehicles, applied to agency supply.

Registering

How registration works

  • Send the form on the registration page, or call and do it on the phone. It takes a few minutes and asks only what we need to match you to work.
  • We come back to confirm what you hold and what shifts it opens up. If your licence categories or tickets do not match the work available, we tell you that plainly rather than keeping you on a list.
  • Documents are checked before your first shift, not after it. That is a licence check code, your Driver CPC card and digital tachograph card if you are driving professionally, any forklift or specialist certificates and proof of your right to work in the UK.
  • Two work-related references are taken. If you are new to the industry, tell us — there is a way through it, but the referee list has to be honest.
  • You get a Key Information Document before you agree terms with us. That is a legal requirement, it is a separate document and it shows what you will be paid and what comes off it. It is explained on the Key Information Document page.
  • Once you are on the books, licence entitlements are re-checked every 90 days for as long as you are registered.
Documents

What to have ready

Your driving licence

Both the photocard and a DVLA check code, which you generate yourself on the GOV.UK "view or share your driving licence information" service. A check code is valid for 21 days from the day you create it.

Driver CPC card

Needed to drive a lorry, bus or coach professionally. It is kept current by 35 hours of periodic training every five years and driving professionally without it can carry a fine of up to £1,000.

Digital tachograph driver card

Present and readable. Tell us before the shift if yours is lost, stolen or faulty rather than on the gate.

Right to work

Original documents, or a Home Office share code if you can generate one. British and Irish citizens cannot generate one and use documents instead.

Forklift certificates

The certificate itself, not a photo of a plastic card with no issuing body on it. The truck category on the certificate has to match the truck on the job.

Specialist qualifications

ADR, lorry loader, Moffett, tanker and PCV entitlements, with the classes and categories legible. These are checked against the specific work.

Two references

Work-related, with contact details that answer. For planning and traffic office roles at least one should be from a transport operation.

A CV if you have one

Useful but not required. The registration form does not take an upload — send it to hello@transporttemps.co.uk with your name in the subject line and we will attach it to your file.

Money

Pay, holiday and the fee question

You are paid PAYE and weekly. Tax and National Insurance come off at source. Holiday accrues on the hours you work: almost all workers, including agency workers, are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks' paid holiday a year, which is 28 days for someone on a standard five-day week.

We never charge you a fee for finding you work. That is not a policy we invented — under the Employment Agencies Act 1973 an employment agency or employment business may not demand or receive a fee from a work-seeker for finding or seeking to find them work, outside narrow prescribed exceptions. Doing so is a criminal offence. If anyone in this industry asks you to pay for a job, that is the point to walk away.

What affects your rate, how overtime and night uplifts are agreed and what happens at twelve weeks are all set out on pay and rates and the Agency Workers Regulations page.

Training

Training and progression

Honest position, stated once: Transport Temps does not run a training school, does not hold accreditation as a training provider and does not fund licence acquisition. Any page in this industry promising free CPC or a free licence deserves a hard look at who is actually paying for it.

What we do is practical. We tell you which shifts your current entitlements open up, which ones are closed to you and exactly what would change that — the C+E category, an accredited reach ticket, ADR in tanks rather than packages. We track your Driver CPC and card expiries alongside your file and flag them before they lapse, because a lapsed card costs you shifts you were already booked on. And when a hirer asks for a qualification you are close to, we say so rather than putting you forward and hoping.

Questions from drivers

Does it cost me anything to register?

No. It never will. Under the Employment Agencies Act 1973 an employment business may not demand or receive a fee from a work-seeker for finding them work, apart from narrow prescribed exceptions. It is a criminal offence to do so.

Am I employed by Transport Temps or by the company I work at?

By us. Transport Temps is an employment business, so you are engaged and paid through us and work under the hirer's direction while you are on their site. Your pay, deductions and holiday accrual are ours to handle.

How often am I paid?

Weekly, through PAYE, with tax and National Insurance deducted at source. Your Key Information Document sets out the pay interval and shows a representative example of gross pay, deductions and take-home before you agree terms.

Do I get holiday pay?

Yes. Almost all workers, including agency workers, are entitled to 5.6 weeks' paid holiday a year — 28 days for a standard five-day week. Holiday accrues on the hours you actually work and is shown on your Key Information Document.

What is a DVLA check code and how do I get one?

It is a code you generate yourself on the GOV.UK service for viewing or sharing your driving licence information. It lets us see your record, including categories, points and disqualifications, without you handing over anything permanent. A check code is valid for 21 days.

Why do you re-check my licence every 90 days?

Because entitlements and endorsements change between shifts and a hirer relying on a check from six months ago is relying on nothing. It is one code, it takes a minute and it keeps you eligible for the work you are already doing.

Can I say no to a shift?

Yes. Agency work is offered, not allocated. Turning down a shift does not take you off the books. Accepting one and then not turning up does.

What if I want a permanent job rather than agency work?

Then Freight Talent is the right brand — it is the permanent-only sister company under the same parent. It is a straight referral that costs you nothing. Transport Temps places temporary and agency work only.

Need staff?

Tell us who you need

Give us the class, the count, the dates and the shift. We confirm what we can cover and say plainly when we cannot.
